using functional magnetic resonance imaging to differentiate between healthy aging subjects, mild cognitive impairment, and alzheimer’s patients

چکیده
background: alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia which is still difficult to be differentiated from other types of brain disorders. moreover, mild cognitive impairment refers to the presence of cognitive impairments that is not severe enough to meet the criteria of alzheimer's, and its diagnosis in early stages is so critical. there is currently no distinct method available for diagnosing alzheimer's or mild cognitive impairment, and their diagnosis needs a combination of different methods and assessments. methods: the aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fmri) in differentiating between alzheimer's, mild cognitive impairment (mci) and healthy aging. to prove fmri's ability, resting-state brain activation patterns between these three groups of subjects were compared using independent component analysis (ica) algorithm. forty age- and sex-matched subjects, 15 elderly, 11 mci and 14 alzheimer's subjects were examined. results: the results showed that during a certain resting-state session, healthy aging brain benefits from larger area and greater intensity of activation (compared with mci and alzheimer's group) in posterior cingulate cortex (pcc) region of the brain, as part of default mode network. conclusions: this difference in activation pattern can be used as a diagnostic criterion in using fmri for differentiating between alzheimer's disease (ad), mci and healthy aging. keywords: fmri, default mode network, alzheimer's, mild cognitive impairment, resting-state. normal 0 false false false microsoftinternetexplorer4

Magnetic resonance imaging predictors of cognition in mild cognitive impairment.
OBJECTIVES To describe magnetic resonance imaging characteristics in a large sample of subjects with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and to investigate associations between these characteristics and cognition. DESIGN Cohort study. SETTING Baseline data of a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial of galantamine in MCI. PATIENTS Included in the study were 896 subjects w...
متن کاملEvent-related functional magnetic resonance imaging changes during relational retrieval in normal aging and amnestic mild cognitive impairment.
The earliest cognitive deficits observed in amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) appear to center on memory tasks that require relational memory (RM), the ability to link or integrate unrelated pieces of information. RM impairments in aMCI likely reflect neural changes in the medial temporal lobe (MTL) and posterior parietal cortex (PPC). We tested the hypothesis that individuals with aMCI...
متن کاملAbsolute quantification in proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy is useful to differentiate amnesic mild cognitive impairment from Alzheimer's disease and healthy aging.
BACKGROUND/AIMS Amnesic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) is thought to represent a transitional state between healthy aging and very mild Alzheimer's disease (AD). It is very important to diagnose aMCI for early treatment. In order to investigate biochemical changes in aMCI, we measured metabolite concentrations using proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy ((1)H-MRS) from patients with aMCI and...

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the volumetric and spectroscopy aspects of hippocampus in patients with mild Alzheimer's disease (AD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). METHODS A series of patients older than 65 years and with memory deficit were studied. RESULTS The evocation of words test presented a significant reduction in the number of words recalled by the patients with MCI and mild AD as com...
متن کاملReliability measures of functional magnetic resonance imaging in a longitudinal evaluation of mild cognitive impairment
As the aging population grows, it has become increasingly important to carefully characterize amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI), a preclinical stage of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is a valuable tool for monitoring disease progression in selectively vulnerable brain regions associated with AD neuropathology. However, the reliability of fMRI data...
